I get interested in different anime genres at different points in time. There have been times I just wanted to watch cute shows and there was a time I got really into romcoms. And then there’s last year, where for some reason, I was interested in gender swap anime. However, I quickly ran into a problem. When I was looking for recommendations or listings on the anime progress tracking sites I use, everyone always lumped this stuff in with crossdressing or going against gender roles, even though they are NOT the same thing. There are only a handful of shows I’ve watched that I’d consider to contain true gender swapping and it’s not always going to be the protagonist that has their gender changed, so this list is going to be my top shows where gender swapping is a main theme. I’m going to be sticking to actual gender transformation and alternate universe versions of characters since I’m not that interested in body swapping. 8. So I'm A Spider, So What?I’m going to start with something that started this year. The main character, a high school girl ends up getting reincarnated as a spider monster in a fantasy world. To make things worse, she starts off in a dungeon full of dangerous monsters. However, she’s not the only one that reincarnated. Her entire class ended up in that world as well. Her male classmate, Kanata Ooshima reincarnated as a girl named Karnatia Seri Anabald, also known as Katia. The show will go back and forth between Kumoko struggling to survive as a spider and her classmates, most of which being together and actually human. Everyone there that reincarnated is aware of who is a reincarnation and Katia acts like her former self when around other reincarnations. 7. Gugure! Kokkuri-sanThis show was definitely a weird one. It follows a young girl named Kohina who calls herself a doll. One day she ends up summoning Kokkuri-san, a lower-ranking ghost in Japanese folklore. Originally, Kokkuri intended to haunt Kohina, but he was worried about her after finding out she didn’t really eat anything besides cup ramen. After that, he kind of ends up becoming her caretaker. A couple other spirits end up hanging out at her house, one of them being the dog spirit Inugami. Back when they were still alive, Kohina was the only one to pay attention to them so they ended up loving her, a bit too much. As a dog spirit, Inugami cannot remember what their gender was so they can switch between a male and female form whenever they want. Several episodes in, Kokkuri-san ends up suffering a curse that turns him into a woman. Due to accidentally destroying the instructions on bringing him back to normal, he ends up still being a woman in the next episode. The curse ends up being broken in the end, though. 6. Girl Meets GirlHazamu, a shy boy who loved gardening, ended up working up the courage to confess his love to the girl he liked. However, she rejected him. After being turned down he wanders up My. Kashimayama where he first met her to reconsider his feelings. He ends up getting lost and wishes upon a shooting star, but the star actually ended up being a spaceship that literally crushed him to death. The alien piloting the ship felt guilty about what happened so he used his alien technology to bring him back to life, but there’s a catch. The alien would not be able to bring Hazamu back as a boy and after that, the boy would come back to life as a girl. It ends up being no secret that Hazamu became a girl since it ended up being all over the news and most characters were pretty supportive of his transition. Unlike most gender swap anime, Hazumu just went with it when most other gender swap protagonists would be freaking out due to their change in sex. 5. To Love RuAliens seem to always make things weird in fiction and this anime is no exception. Rito Yuuki has incredibly bad luck, always failing to confess to his crush due to highly unrealistic circumstances. One day while sulking he accidentally ends up becoming engaged to Lala Satalin Deviluke, the princess of the planet Deviluke. After she enters his life, all kinds of crazy weird things end up happening and they encounter several other aliens. One of which is from the planet, Memorze. Aliens from this planet can change gender upon triggering a specific stimulus. For Ren/Run Elsie Jewelria, their gender changes when they sneeze. And they both have different personalities. The male self (Ren) hates Rito for liking Lala and the female self (Run) isn’t fond of Lala because she likes Rito. The gender swap doesn’t stop there though. At one point in the series, Lala is working on an invention that doesn’t work the way she wanted. It ends up getting used on Rito and he turns into a girl. Lala later makes this into an invention that she would actually use on him every now and then, to his disappointment. 4. Log HorizonOne day when logging into the online fantasy game Elder Tales, several players are sucked into the game’s world and their in-game avatars become their new bodies. Since some players played as the opposite sex, they would find out what it was like to be a different gender. Not everyone was happy with that though. Akatsuki, a girl who played as a male character is quick to ask for a gender change potion since she feels way more comfortable in a female body. Later in the show, Tetora/Tetra becomes part of the main cast. She was a male in real life but after ending up in Elder Tales, adjusted to her new body and had no desire to change her gender. Not only did the players have to get used to these new bodies, but they had to figure out how things were going to work in the game and manage to set up their own government. 3. Gonna Be The Twin-tail!!Souji Mitsuka is a high school student that really loves twin-tails. One day, he meets the alien Twoearle in his family’s restaurant and she gives him a bracelet. In their first encounter, his childhood friend Aika Tsube does not trust Twoearle at all. It isn’t long before Souji has to use that bracelet. By activating it, he will transform into a twin-tailed girl named Tail Red. While a girl, he fights perverted aliens that want to take over the earth with their perverted desires or something. His female self ends up becoming really popular, but it’s kept secret for the most part. His mother found out immediately but she was extremely supportive. Souji won’t have to fight the aliens alone, though. He’s later joined by Aika who becomes Tail Blue and their school’s student council president, Erina Shindou who ends up becoming Tail Yellow. During this time, Twoearle is allowed to stay at Souji’s house and even builds a special headquarters. Also, she’s really horny for Souji, which his mother is for some reason okay with, but Aika strongly disapproves. 2. KämpferOne day, Natsuru Seno ends up receiving a stuffed animal from his childhood friend, Kaede Sakura. This stuffed animal is a part of the “entrail animals” series which features animals that were killed in brutal ways. For some reason, people that got these would become Kampfers, female fighters. However, Natsuru is male. He soon ends up learning that he has to fight other Kampfers which leads to his life becoming a living hell. Not only does he have to put up with this, but Kaede, who he has a crush on falls in love with his female form. To make things even more complicated, his school separates the boys and girls and he ends up having to attend school as both his male and female self. To make things worse, it takes time to have better control over his transformations so he comes close to changing forms at the worst possible times. 1. Fate Series (Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Grand Order)In a world where magic exists, there is something known as the holy grail war. Perhaps I should say worlds? Fate lore is so complex and each series seems to take place in its own world even when it seems like some of them could connect. For the most part, each show kinda just takes place in its own timeline. Anyways, the holy grail war has several people become masters and they work with servants. These servants are historical figures or in some cases, they may come from the future. By winning the war they can get the grail and make a wish.
Several historical figures have had their genders swapped from what they were in legends or actual historical records. Saber, or Artoria Pendragon is a female version of King Arthur. She shows up in Stay Night, Zero, and Unlimited Blade Works. She serves Shirou Emiya in SN and UBW, but in Zero she serves his adoptive father, years before his death. In Fate/Grand Order there are several servants that were gender swapped. One that you’ll end up seeing a lot of is Leonardo da Vinci. While most gender swapped servants are simply alternate universe versions of characters, in Fate canon da Vinci is male, but ended up taking the appearance of Mona Lisa when summoned. Unlike most of the other servants, da Vinci doesn’t really fight and acts more like an assistant at Chaldea. There’s a lot of Fate series out there and I haven’t seen them all. Most I’ve seen are fine, but stay away from Prisma Illya. These are my top anime with gender swap. I know the last is technically more than one show, but the franchise is so big, I had to include everything. Or should I say, mostly everything. If you were looking for stuff like this, hopefully you found something you’re interested in. If not, sorry, I guess? Just a warning: a few of these are pretty ecchi/lewd: To Love Ru, Gonna Be The Twin-Tail!!, and Kämpfer. I don’t really have anything else to say, so I’m not really sure how to end this. I'm just gonna stop typing now.
