Recently, I got my hands on Layton’s Mystery Journey and played it to the end and while I did like it, I have mixed feelings about what it is. The game begins with a dream about Katrielle Layton’s father, Hershel but after that the game has next to nothing to do with him. After that, we soon see her setting up her detective agency and soon meeting a talking dog, later named Sherl. The dog is supposedly Kat’s first client, but she almost immediately gets a new case to work on afterward, so the talking dog plot point is pretty much ignored throughout the game.
Rather than just following one story like previous Layton games this one follows several different cases that are claimed to be connected but in all honesty, there’s little to no connection between most of them. Since they tackle different subjects that can range anywhere from not that great to actually good. But having these multiple different stories just means there’s a ton of filler content which is kind of annoying because there are plot points I would have liked explored more. The puzzles solved in each case were a mixed bag. While some I liked, others were either not that strong, really bad or made little sense at all. Some of the twists at the end of cases didn’t have me surprised because some of it was mystery plots we’ve seen before and others were spoiled by the game’s trailers. Near the end, however, there were some twists I liked that legitimately had me surprised. Sadly, the ending leaves me with more questions than answers. Worst of all, we don’t learn anything about Hershel Layton even though the game uses him being missing as a selling point! We learn nothing about the dog, and we’re given very little backstory to Katrielle herself. All that’s said is that she’s Professor Layton’s daughter – that’s it. Despite some flaws, I actually did enjoy this game. While there isn’t a whole lot of plot, it was pretty good when it actually followed one. Like I said earlier, not every puzzle in the game was bad. There were several enjoyed (plus I have continued to come back to the daily puzzles). At this point though, I believe the series is gonna have to make some changes to continue with Katrielle, who happens to be one of my new favorite characters. Either quit having several cases, or have just a few LONG cases that actually connect well to each other (like Ace Attorney most of the time) and make sure it follows a good plot. Plus, don’t create plot points (missing Hershel Layton, talking dog, etc.) and not do anything about them. If you’re into the series already, it’s still worth playing but if you’re new just start with the original (Curious Village, Diabolical Box, Unwound Future) or the prequel trilogy (Last Specter (watch the movie after this one), Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy).
