At one point, I was really interested in watching gender swap manga. However, finding content where the characters actually had their sexes changed was a little difficult because all of the recommendation lists and progress tracking sites had these grouped in with crossdressing or just going against gender roles. There was only so much I could find for anime so I ended up reading manga instead. Maybe a little too much manga? Well, I’ve read so much that I figured I should recommend some while at the same time praying at least most of these will get an anime adaptation at some point. 10. Onii-chan wa Oshimai!/ONIMAI: I'm Now Your Sister! This is the story about an older brother named Mahiro that’s pretty much a NEET. He stays at home playing video games, reading manga, and anything else typical for an otaku. One day, his younger sister, Mihari, who happens to be a scientist, has him try out some strange drugs. When he wakes up the next morning, he has the body of a middle school girl. Against his will, his sister makes him attend middle school where he makes some female friends and gets used to his life as a girl. Things aren’t perfect though since the drugs come close to wearing off sometimes and Mahiro ends up peeing herself more than once. Overall, it was an interesting read. 9. Gacha Gacha: The Next RevolutionA normal high school boy ends up trying out a Gacha Gacha video game but things go wrong due to a glitch. This glitch makes it so that every time Akira sneezes his gender will change. While he does have trouble, like transforming at the wrong times, he ends up using it to his advantage. As a girl, he ends up becoming closer to Yurika Sakuraba, a girl that he has a crush on. However, keeping this gender switching ability a secret isn’t easy. Akira is constantly getting into trouble all thanks to that video game. It was pretty entertaining but it is a pretty ecchi manga and the main character is a big pervert. 8. KimoOta, Idol Yarutteyo/Disgusting Otaku, Become An Idol!I once saw someone say that this could work just fine as a standard idol story without any gender swapping and while I kind of agree, I’m fine with this. The story follows an otaku named Yousuke Aisaka who happens to be a huge fan of idols. One day he wakes up as a female version of himself named Yoko. After getting over the shock, he, now a she, decides to become an idol. She meets idols she was a fan of, makes new friends, and struggles to be successful. So far, the gender swap doesn’t have much to do with the plot and it isn’t brought up very much. It’s still an interesting manga, though. 7. Tensei Pandemic/Gender Change PandemicBeing a boy with a feminine appearance can at times lead to people assuming your gender and that has happened more than once with Hinata Imamura. Due to some trauma with his first love, he wanted to become more manly than anybody else. One day, he ends up getting injected with a shot and the day after that, he ends up with a female body. To make things worse, if he were to kiss someone or transfer fluids, it would cause their sexes to change. This causes trouble throughout the school that most students aren’t even aware of. For a good while, Hinata hides the face that his sex has changed. While this was pretty interesting, it is pretty ecchi. 6. Boku GirlFor this next one, we’ve got another boy with a feminine appearance. Mizuki Suzushiro is constantly turning down the confessions of many boys that ask him out thinking that he’s a girl. To make things worse, the girl he likes thinks of him more as one of the girls than a potential love interest. After witnessing Mizuki turn a guy down, the trickster god Loki who has grown bored of playing tricks on other gods decides to prank Mizuki by turning him into a girl. Waking up as a girl, Mizuki ends up freaking out. Mizuki’s best friend is the first to find out about what happened but for a while, it’s kept secret from everyone else. Mizuki ends up spending the next several days hiding his new female body and secretly figuring out how to live as a girl. Like some of the previous stories on this list, this one was pretty ecchi too but it was still a good read. 5. Ore no Tomodachi ♂♀ ga Kawaisugite Komaru!/I am Worried that my Childhood Friend is too Cute! It’s nice when you can reunite with an old friend, but when you find out they’ve got a condition that changes their sex, it can make things pretty awkward. For the first time in ten years, Amano returns to the city he lived in as a kid. He meets with his childhood friend Yukio Sawataria who suddenly turns into a girl. While Yukio is happy to see their friend again, Amano feels more than a little awkward. It turns out that Yuko is affected by an illness called “spontaneous isomerism metamorphosis” that causes people to change sex at random times. Because of this. Amano will have to spend time with Yukio as a girl and also deal with other people that have the same condition. This manga is a bit ecchi as well, but it’s not too bad. I thought this was pretty enjoyable. 4. Mendokusagari Danshi ga Asa Okitara Onnanoko ni Natteita Hanashi/About a Lazy High School Guy Who Woke Up as a Girl One MorningThings were going normally for Shuuichi Hayasaka until one day his lazy roommate, Masamune Yasuda woke up as a girl. Having to suddenly share a room with a girl makes Hayasaka feel uncomfortable but Yasuda doesn’t really mind it because whether male or female he can still sleep. Everyone at the school finds out about it and there’s even an announcement made. For the most part, everyone just accepts what happened. Their classmate Sugimura is really into it because he’s a fan of gender swap stories. However, the same can’t be said about Shuuichi’s sister who had a crush on Yasuda. Overall, I really liked how casual this story is. There are also bonus chapters were Shuuichi becomes a girl instead. 3. Majitora!/Magical Trans!High school boy Minami-kun spots a poster for the Magical Girl Club asking for members. He decides to join thinking that he’ll get to see some cute girls cosplaying. Along with his childhood friend, he receives a smartphone app that will turn the phone’s owner into a magical girl. Minami-kun is pretty quick to get into this, often enjoying being in his new female body. Due to being so into it, Minami decides to do a lot of activities as a girl. Eventually, their club gets a rival and there’s some occasional fighting but for the most part, it’s just casual slice of life stuff. It was pretty entertaining. 2. Ame Nochi Hare/Clear Up After RainAmagai Gakuen, a prestigious school for boys, gets hit by an unusual spring storm during the entrance ceremony. Four boys who were late for the ceremony: Hazuki, Toma, Yusuke, and Junta get caught up in the storm’s violence and something strange happens. All of them get transformed into girls. They’re soon found by a staff member that gives them a place to stay, keeping their secret. It doesn’t take long for the boys to learn that every time it rains, their genders will change so they have to make plans according to the weather, sometimes attending a boy school and sometimes attending a school for girls. When I think of gender swap manga, this is one of the first I think of. I really liked this one. 1. Osananajimi wa Onnanoko ni/My Childhood Friend MUST Become A GirlOne day, Shuichi saves a magical fairy named Sylphy from drowning in a pond. To thank him, she offers to grant him a wish. Shuichi is quick to ask for a female childhood friend. However, it isn’t possible for Sylphy to create someone that never existed so instead she turns Shuichi’s male childhood friend, Iori into a girl. Iori isn’t happy about this but as long as he feels strongly about being male, his female form won’t last. But that’s not going to stop Sylphy, who continues to transform him into a girl. Thanks to this, his whole class knows about it. Iori has to deal with being transformed at inconvenient times and tries to keep it a secret from several people including his mother. To be honest, this is one of the most memorable gender swap manga I’ve read. These are my current picks for gender swap manga. I’ve read several others so another list could happen someday. It’s more likely than anime since there are way more for manga. Hopefully there was something here that caught your interest. If not, oh well. These are just a handful I liked that I wanted to say something about. Now that I have, I don’t really have anything else to say. So, either check these out or move on with your life.

After not saying much about, it's time I finally reveal some more information about my next visual novel! I've been wanting to make a visual novel like this for a while and I finally got around to it. Development has gone as fast as I'd have liked due to me now having a real job and some big projects going on at home. In my upcoming visual novel, "Winter Dream", you'll be following Caron Duff who moves in with his uncle during his winter vacation. It won't all be relaxing though, since his uncle owns a restaurant and will be putting him to work. While he stays with his uncle, Caron meets three interesting girls. Velda PennThe first of the girls he'll encounter is Velda since she works at his uncle's restaurant. Unfortunately, she's not the most pleasant person to be around and won't hesitate to say the rudest things to just about anyone. Gwen CoyHe'll run into Gwen not too much later. She's pretty shy around new people but the more often she sees someone, the more likely it is she'll be comfortable around them as long as they don't upset her. Rose SherburnThe last of the girls is Rose. She's very nice and often putting others before herself. Most of her time is spent taking care of or helping children. Since this is still in development, I have no idea what the difficulty is quite yet. I'll figure it out after it receives more testing. There are several more features I want to add before this out too. One thing I'd like to point out is that despite it being called "Winter Dream", which I don't know if the name will stick, there isn't going to be a whole lot of snow and that's for two reasons. The first being that I don't have enough backgrounds with snow and the other is because where I live, it's totally up in the air how much snow we'll get when winter hits. Sometimes we'll get a lot and sometimes we get next to nothing.
This visual novel is going to be a bit different from any of the stuff I've worked on previously. In terms of length, I'd say it's definitely longer than School For The Friendless. Unlike School For The Friendless, when you complete the three routes, either with a friendship or romance ending, you'll unlock an all new "true" route. This is because the visual novel is based on stuff from Key/Visual Arts like Kanon, Air, Little Busters, and Summer Pockets. If you've read any of their stuff than you've most likely figured out that this visual novel is one of the saddest I've written. I'll admit, I did get a little choked up when writing some of the final scenes. Anyways, you can look forward to this coming out Summer 2021, as long as I don't have to delay it for whatever reason. Hope you look forward to what I consider one of my best. I get interested in different anime genres at different points in time. There have been times I just wanted to watch cute shows and there was a time I got really into romcoms. And then there’s last year, where for some reason, I was interested in gender swap anime. However, I quickly ran into a problem. When I was looking for recommendations or listings on the anime progress tracking sites I use, everyone always lumped this stuff in with crossdressing or going against gender roles, even though they are NOT the same thing. There are only a handful of shows I’ve watched that I’d consider to contain true gender swapping and it’s not always going to be the protagonist that has their gender changed, so this list is going to be my top shows where gender swapping is a main theme. I’m going to be sticking to actual gender transformation and alternate universe versions of characters since I’m not that interested in body swapping. 8. So I'm A Spider, So What?I’m going to start with something that started this year. The main character, a high school girl ends up getting reincarnated as a spider monster in a fantasy world. To make things worse, she starts off in a dungeon full of dangerous monsters. However, she’s not the only one that reincarnated. Her entire class ended up in that world as well. Her male classmate, Kanata Ooshima reincarnated as a girl named Karnatia Seri Anabald, also known as Katia. The show will go back and forth between Kumoko struggling to survive as a spider and her classmates, most of which being together and actually human. Everyone there that reincarnated is aware of who is a reincarnation and Katia acts like her former self when around other reincarnations. 7. Gugure! Kokkuri-sanThis show was definitely a weird one. It follows a young girl named Kohina who calls herself a doll. One day she ends up summoning Kokkuri-san, a lower-ranking ghost in Japanese folklore. Originally, Kokkuri intended to haunt Kohina, but he was worried about her after finding out she didn’t really eat anything besides cup ramen. After that, he kind of ends up becoming her caretaker. A couple other spirits end up hanging out at her house, one of them being the dog spirit Inugami. Back when they were still alive, Kohina was the only one to pay attention to them so they ended up loving her, a bit too much. As a dog spirit, Inugami cannot remember what their gender was so they can switch between a male and female form whenever they want. Several episodes in, Kokkuri-san ends up suffering a curse that turns him into a woman. Due to accidentally destroying the instructions on bringing him back to normal, he ends up still being a woman in the next episode. The curse ends up being broken in the end, though. 6. Girl Meets GirlHazamu, a shy boy who loved gardening, ended up working up the courage to confess his love to the girl he liked. However, she rejected him. After being turned down he wanders up My. Kashimayama where he first met her to reconsider his feelings. He ends up getting lost and wishes upon a shooting star, but the star actually ended up being a spaceship that literally crushed him to death. The alien piloting the ship felt guilty about what happened so he used his alien technology to bring him back to life, but there’s a catch. The alien would not be able to bring Hazamu back as a boy and after that, the boy would come back to life as a girl. It ends up being no secret that Hazamu became a girl since it ended up being all over the news and most characters were pretty supportive of his transition. Unlike most gender swap anime, Hazumu just went with it when most other gender swap protagonists would be freaking out due to their change in sex. 5. To Love RuAliens seem to always make things weird in fiction and this anime is no exception. Rito Yuuki has incredibly bad luck, always failing to confess to his crush due to highly unrealistic circumstances. One day while sulking he accidentally ends up becoming engaged to Lala Satalin Deviluke, the princess of the planet Deviluke. After she enters his life, all kinds of crazy weird things end up happening and they encounter several other aliens. One of which is from the planet, Memorze. Aliens from this planet can change gender upon triggering a specific stimulus. For Ren/Run Elsie Jewelria, their gender changes when they sneeze. And they both have different personalities. The male self (Ren) hates Rito for liking Lala and the female self (Run) isn’t fond of Lala because she likes Rito. The gender swap doesn’t stop there though. At one point in the series, Lala is working on an invention that doesn’t work the way she wanted. It ends up getting used on Rito and he turns into a girl. Lala later makes this into an invention that she would actually use on him every now and then, to his disappointment. 4. Log HorizonOne day when logging into the online fantasy game Elder Tales, several players are sucked into the game’s world and their in-game avatars become their new bodies. Since some players played as the opposite sex, they would find out what it was like to be a different gender. Not everyone was happy with that though. Akatsuki, a girl who played as a male character is quick to ask for a gender change potion since she feels way more comfortable in a female body. Later in the show, Tetora/Tetra becomes part of the main cast. She was a male in real life but after ending up in Elder Tales, adjusted to her new body and had no desire to change her gender. Not only did the players have to get used to these new bodies, but they had to figure out how things were going to work in the game and manage to set up their own government. 3. Gonna Be The Twin-tail!!Souji Mitsuka is a high school student that really loves twin-tails. One day, he meets the alien Twoearle in his family’s restaurant and she gives him a bracelet. In their first encounter, his childhood friend Aika Tsube does not trust Twoearle at all. It isn’t long before Souji has to use that bracelet. By activating it, he will transform into a twin-tailed girl named Tail Red. While a girl, he fights perverted aliens that want to take over the earth with their perverted desires or something. His female self ends up becoming really popular, but it’s kept secret for the most part. His mother found out immediately but she was extremely supportive. Souji won’t have to fight the aliens alone, though. He’s later joined by Aika who becomes Tail Blue and their school’s student council president, Erina Shindou who ends up becoming Tail Yellow. During this time, Twoearle is allowed to stay at Souji’s house and even builds a special headquarters. Also, she’s really horny for Souji, which his mother is for some reason okay with, but Aika strongly disapproves. 2. KämpferOne day, Natsuru Seno ends up receiving a stuffed animal from his childhood friend, Kaede Sakura. This stuffed animal is a part of the “entrail animals” series which features animals that were killed in brutal ways. For some reason, people that got these would become Kampfers, female fighters. However, Natsuru is male. He soon ends up learning that he has to fight other Kampfers which leads to his life becoming a living hell. Not only does he have to put up with this, but Kaede, who he has a crush on falls in love with his female form. To make things even more complicated, his school separates the boys and girls and he ends up having to attend school as both his male and female self. To make things worse, it takes time to have better control over his transformations so he comes close to changing forms at the worst possible times. 1. Fate Series (Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Grand Order)In a world where magic exists, there is something known as the holy grail war. Perhaps I should say worlds? Fate lore is so complex and each series seems to take place in its own world even when it seems like some of them could connect. For the most part, each show kinda just takes place in its own timeline. Anyways, the holy grail war has several people become masters and they work with servants. These servants are historical figures or in some cases, they may come from the future. By winning the war they can get the grail and make a wish.
Several historical figures have had their genders swapped from what they were in legends or actual historical records. Saber, or Artoria Pendragon is a female version of King Arthur. She shows up in Stay Night, Zero, and Unlimited Blade Works. She serves Shirou Emiya in SN and UBW, but in Zero she serves his adoptive father, years before his death. In Fate/Grand Order there are several servants that were gender swapped. One that you’ll end up seeing a lot of is Leonardo da Vinci. While most gender swapped servants are simply alternate universe versions of characters, in Fate canon da Vinci is male, but ended up taking the appearance of Mona Lisa when summoned. Unlike most of the other servants, da Vinci doesn’t really fight and acts more like an assistant at Chaldea. There’s a lot of Fate series out there and I haven’t seen them all. Most I’ve seen are fine, but stay away from Prisma Illya. These are my top anime with gender swap. I know the last is technically more than one show, but the franchise is so big, I had to include everything. Or should I say, mostly everything. If you were looking for stuff like this, hopefully you found something you’re interested in. If not, sorry, I guess? Just a warning: a few of these are pretty ecchi/lewd: To Love Ru, Gonna Be The Twin-Tail!!, and Kämpfer. I don’t really have anything else to say, so I’m not really sure how to end this. I'm just gonna stop typing now. |
